Harold Whitehouse, Jr., is a fifty-plus year member of St. John's Lodge, a native and still a resident of the South End and a fixture in the City of Portsmouth. In this book, he tells about his childhood in a different city than we have today, one where the South End was a neighborhood of ordinary families of shipyard workers, before Strawbery Banke and gentrification changed the area forever. Harold tells of his paper routes, the Haven School, his service in the U.S. Navy on board the battleship USS Missouri and his work at the Portsmouth Herald and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The book's title comes from his family's rule of “home by nine,” which was enforced on Harold even after he joined the Navy at seventeen and came home on leave. He later entered local politics, serving on the police commission, the school board for sixteen years and the city council for twelve years, retiring in 2007.
Home by Nine: The Real South End is available from local book stores. Price $24.95. Hardcover, 136 pages, published in 2008. ISBN: 978-1-931807-69-2.
Mark E. Furber, also a member of St. John's Lodge, collaborated with the Australian Masonic author Kent Henderson, to produce the North American edition of Freemasonry for Wives and Others. This compact book contains information about Freemasonry for family members of men who are interested in becoming Masons, or indeed for anyone interested in basic information about the Order. The first part of the book contains common questions and answers about Freemasonry, and the second part contains a closer look at the organization and history of the Order, with emphasis on the United States and Canada.
Freemasonry for Wives and Others is available from Southern California Research Lodge for $6.00, plus shipping. Softcover, 52 pages, published in 2008. The SCRL book listing and ordering instructions are here.
